It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The holidays are a time for celebration with family and friends. They’re also the time of year when many people find themselves “falling off the wagon” when it comes to healthy habits. This can lead to a lot of guilt and stress during a time that should be enjoyed and cherished.
One of the things that make our jobs at Wilcox Wellness & Fitness so rewarding is seeing the incredible progress that our clients make to transform their lives in a relatively short period of time. Tammy McLaughlin is one of those incredible stories. Tammy has come such a long way in just a short period of time. She has completely changed her life by committing to a healthy lifestyle that she will be able to sustain for the rest of her life.
Things totally change when you become a parent. There is a season in life for everything. There are seasons in our life where nutrition and exercise are not the priority. The key is to recognize that these are seasons to our life, and even though winter feels like it will last forever – spring is coming!

This past week my family and I took a 3-day trip hiking into Zealand Falls Hut in the White Mountains. While we were in the hut, we had the pleasure of meeting many amazing people, one of whom was Greybeard. Dale (Greybeard) is a thru-hiker on a mission to hike the entire Appalachian Trail. As if that wasn’t impressive enough – at 82 years old, Dale is working on setting the world record to be the oldest person to complete the mission.
It is not about how much you can lift, how fast you can go, or any fancy fitness tricks. It is not about what you do in the gym. It is about what you do in the gym that prepares you for everything else in life. It is about being capable and confident. It’s about living your best life, having fun, being inspired, and being excited!
Life is just so busy. We are pulled in so many different directions. We have commitments at work, with our families, and in the community. Taking care of ourselves and committing to healthy living falls to the bottom of the list.
This works OK for a period of time. Eventually, it will catch up with us and being all things to all people leaves us feeling depleted and drained at the end of the day.
In order to be at our best for the people who rely on us, we need to commit first to taking care of ourselves. ‘You need to put your oxygen mask on first.’
