As soon as I was asked to write for BDN Blogs, I knew this post is exactly how I would get started. Gretchen Ruben is an author who studies habits and happiness, in her recent book, Better than Before, she writes, “Habits are the invisible architecture of daily life. We repeat about 40 percent of our behavior almost daily, so our habits shape our existence, and our future. If we change our habits, we change our lives.” Below are the 5 most important habits to maintain a healthy lifestyle that anyone can implement in their life today that will have massive impact. These are things that most people struggle with to be consistent. I am going to break each of these habits down for you in the next 5 weeks and give you strategies to implement in your own life.
Take a personal inventory. Where do you struggle most? Most people struggle with fitting all 5 of these habits into their daily lifestyle consistently. Our modern day lives are so busy and these habits do take time, energy, and effort to implement. Over the next 21 days, make the commitment to improve on each aspect of these habits.
On a Mission
You may notice that in my introduction blog post that I shared with you that the mission of Wilcox Wellness & Fitness is to inspire people to enhance their life by forming healthful habits that are sustainable for a lifetime. Our mission statement is very intentional. There are 3 components to this mission: Inspire people to enhance their life / by forming healthful habits / that are sustainable for a lifetime.
Inspire people to enhance their life
We want to help people enhance their life – we believe that everyone’s life can be enhanced and elevated when they commit to healthy living. We believe that healthy living is the solid foundation from which people excel in every aspect of their life. A commitment to healthy living gives people the confidence and motivation to pursue a higher quality of life. This impacts every aspect of a person’s life – they have a better relationship with their family, they are able to advance more quickly in their careers, and overall their outlook on life in general is so much more positive. This not only effects the individual who is benefiting from the healthy lifestyle but everyone surrounding them – their spouse, children, boss, employees, co-workers, and even the mail man. This ripple effect has an impact on the entire world comes from just committing to a few simple habits.
Forming Healthful Habits
The overall trajectory of a person’s life is determined by the healthy (or unhealthy) foundation that they build and nurture. John Maxwell wrote, “Ultimately, people do not decide their future; they decide their habits and their habits decide their future.” Habits decide your future. What we do daily matters more than what do do once in a while. Habits are so incredibly powerful so this is why we focus so intently on helping shape and ensure people have the right foundation of healthy habits. Aristotle wrote, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore is not an act, but a habit.” We need to ensure that what we are doing on a daily basis is going to set the foundation for a healthy life. This does not need to be overly complicated. If you follow the 5 habits outlined above, you will be setting a solid foundation for a healthy life.
Sustainable for a Lifetime
In the health and fitness industry there is so much information to sift through and many marketers are selling a ‘quick fix’. The problem with these ‘quick fixes’ is that they are not sustainable for a lifetime and they set people up for failure. Our focus is to find the key habits that people can commit to for a lifetime. The habits are not very sexy… or earth shattering… or even surprising. The habits do not come from our own original research or findings. The habits come from how our ancestors took care of their health. These are habits – drinking water, being active, eating whole foods, and eating consistently throughout the day that allowed my grandfather to live an amazing life into his later 90s doing all of the things that he loved to do – fishing, splitting wood, and living independently. My grandfather wasn’t even thinking about being healthy – he just did the things made him feel good and gave him the energy to do the things in life that made him happy. These habits are sustainable for a lifetime.
Implementing a Habit
So we know that habits are important, we know that we want to form healthy habits as the foundation for our amazing life, we know that we want to ensure these habits are going to be sustainable for a lifetime, and we know what habits to implement. Research tells us that it takes 21 days to form a habit. “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” – Lao Tzu.
